Fife Birth Pool Service
WHY BIRTH IN WATER?
There are many reasons why water birth is wonderful aside from the great comfort of having your own space where you can give birth in the warmth of water providing pain relief. This also enables you to move supported in the water into any labouring and birth position you might prefer at any given moment with ease. There is also some significant research to indicate that water birth might protect against damage to your perineum. With all these advantages in mind if water birth was a pharmaceutical medication you could say it would be unethical to not offer it to all appropriate people!
You can see it listed here as a pain relief method from the NHS website: www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/pain-relief-labour/
Dr Sara Wickham shares with us some great water birth research: www.sarawickham.com/research-updates/more-benefits-of-water-for-birth/
WHY DO YOU RUN THIS SERVICE?
I've supported at a number of water labours and births now so have seen a variety of pool set ups. There have been times when the equipment that the parents had sourced failed on the day and this impacted on the birth experience. I am also aware that there are two grades of pool available: domestic and professional with a variety of manufactuers. The domestic models are guaranteed for one owner and designed to be used 2 to 3 times before no longer being guaranteed and being discarded. I have experienced this as I have seen the seams on a pool become mis-shapen and the liner no longer fitting plus multiple times seen a pool deflate with water in it. In some ways it doesn't matter if a second hand pool has never been birthed in but how many times it has been inflated at full capacity. The Fife Birth Pool Service hire out a professional grade pool which is guaranteed by the manufacturer for 40 births and is the same model supplied to the NHS. I applied for this specifically with the manufacter as I wanted the Fife Home Birth Group members to have access to a reliable pool but also because I could see that if i did invest in the facility then I would significantly reduce the number of pools that are discarded thereby being better for mums & babies and the environment.

CUB HIRE
What on earth is a CUB I hear you say? It stands for Comfortable Upright Birth. It is a birthing stool that was invented by a Midwife and is used in some NHS hospitals. I have bought one for members of the Fife Home Birth Group to use because I was quite impressed when I saw it presented at a conference. You can read more about the research and design here: www.cubmama.com/CubBrochureApril2019New.pdf The CUB hire is much the same as the pool hire in terms of process (confirmed booking email and I would deliver and pick up for you) and timing (37-42 weeks). The price is £40 to hire the CUB or if you have already booked your birth pool there would be a reduced rate of £20. |
